Bill, who trains and manages his son Devin, believes that a fight against Ennis is inevitable. The Philadelphia star beat Xander Zayas by seventh-round stoppage to win the WBA and WBO junior middleweight titles. Haney is the WBO welterweight champion.

Although Haney Sr. believes the pair will eventually fight, he thinks both men have some work to do before that happens.

“We’re gonna tighten up 147,” Bill told Champside. “[Ennis] can tighten up 154 and then we’ll get down. Go ahead and tighten up Vergil [Ortiz], [Sebastian] Fundora, do some heavy lifting at 154 and then we’ll meet you.”

Fundora, the 6-foot-5 WBC junior middleweight champion, has already stated that he wants to face smooth, switch-hitting Ennis in a three-belt unification after his mandatory title defense against Ermal Hadribeaj on October 17 at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California.

Josh Kelly, the IBF 154-pound champion who successfully defended his belt against Caoimhin Agyarko, is aiming for a shot at Ennis by the end of the year. Last but not least, Ortiz wants a piece of Ennis as well. The division’s WBC interim champion doesn’t hold a full junior middleweight strap, but he’s viewed by many as Ennis’ biggest threat. He’s ranked No. 2 in The Ring’s rankings, higher than Fundora at No. 3, Kelly at No. 6, but just behind No. 1 Ennis.

The two were on a collision course earlier this year, but legal issues between Ortiz and his promoter, Oscar De La Hoya, prevented their bout from being finalized. They’ve since reconciled and are hoping to face Ennis in the near future.

Ennis might be busy trying to collect all of the belts at 154 pounds, but Team Haney has a few things they need to do as well.

After failing to land a fight against WBA champion Rolando “Rolly” Romero and Keyshawn Davis, the 27-year-old is weighing up his options. As reported by The Ring, Haney is in negotiations to take on Jack Catterall, the No. 3-ranked welterweight. He also holds a secondary version of the WBA title.

More than anything, though, the Haneys would love a rematch with Ryan Garcia.

Haney Sr., of course, considers the Garcia fight the biggest in boxing. However, if Devin can eventually land that rematch and win, that would only increase the marketability of an Ennis bout.

“I think the Ryan Garcia fight is bigger,” Bill continued. “But when he beats Ryan Garcia, that makes the Boots Ennis fight bigger.”
