Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez hopes Saturday night’s Saudi Arabia debut will kick off a mini world tour which will take him to London for a Wembley showdown with Chris Eubank Jr.
The Mexican icon and Ring Magazine super-middleweight champion faces William Scull, who holds the IBF title, in an undisputed showdown at the ANB Arena on Saturday night.
The clash, which tops the latest Fatal Fury event, will be Canelo’s first ever professional fight outside of the USA and Mexico and he is vying to punctuate that milestone by becoming a two-time undisputed champion.
But while he is fully focused on the challenge of undefeated Ring Magazine No.5 Scull on Saturday night, Canelo revealed his desire to make Riyadh the start of a new world tour.
“I would love to do a world tour,” he told The Ring during an exclusive fight week interview.
“I have always dreamed of fighting in London and also in Japan, at the Tokyo Dome. But I think London is a closer possibility right now. “
So far Canelo has gone 8-0 against British fighters thanks to a run which started way back in 2011 with a victory over Matthew Hatton. He has since beaten Ryan Rhodes, Amir Khan, Liam Smith, Ricky Fielding, Callum Smith, Billy Joe Saunders and John Ryder in that order.
An agreement for a fight with Eubank Jr has been close before and now Canelo says he is ready to rekindle that idea.
Eubank Jr, 35, is currently recovering from his unforgettable victory over Conor Benn at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in the main event of The Ring’s first ever fight card.
A rematch with Benn is contracted but a later fight with Canelo in London could now be in the offing.
“I have beaten eight Brits so far?” Canelo asks. “Well it’s going to be nine then.
“I want to fight in the UK and I promise I will do it. I don’t know exactly where yet but I am going to do it.
“Would people like to see me against Chris Eubank Jr? Maybe that’s the fight. That’s a fight I’d consider but we don’t know what is going to happen.
“We will see what will happen but I think the fight between me and Eubank is big, no?
“I think doing big fights is all I want. I want to enjoy everything I do now. I’ve accomplished everything in boxing. Maybe I could beat more world champions but I want to be in more big fights and big events.”
Saturday night's fight between Canelo and Scull is available on DAZN PPV.
