Oscar Collazo easily brushed aside late-notice replacement Neider Valdez in two rounds June 20 at the Frontside Arena in Oceanside, California.
The fight took place at flyweight because Valdez, who stepped in after Joey Canoy had visa issues, was unable to make 105 pounds on short-notice.
Ring, WBA and WBO strawweight king Collazo spoke about potentially staying at 112 pounds and said he'd like to challenge unified champion Ricardo Sandoval (27-2, 18 KOs) for his WBA and WBC world flyweight titles.
While that in-house matchup would be an excellent fight, one man in particular is disappointed Collazo isn't looking to further unify at strawweight. MP Promotions president Gibbons, who co-promotes IBF champion Pedro Taduran, had some choice words for the Puerto Rican.
"He's an embarrassment to walk around and keep saying, "I'm The Ring's pound-for-pound [No. 9-ranked fighter], the best at 105 pounds"... you haven't fought anybody," he told The Ring.
"You fought one Thai [Thammanoon Niyamtrong] that was past his best, you ran from Pedro for years and his last three fights have been completely embarrassing. Pedro is ready to fight. I think Collazo should go to 112 because he's embarrassed the division.
Taduran will likely next face his mandatory challenger DianXing Zhu later this year, with Gibbons stressing that wouldn't block the pathway to a unification bout.
"We're in the middle of talking to Zhu's people, we're working to have the fight done for September or October in the Philippines. Any time he could have stepped up to the plate, unifications supersede a mandatory."
The American power broker insisted he's made overtures to Collazo's representatives, but to no avail.
"I offered it to [Miguel Cotto Promotions Exec Director] Bryan Perez and [Golden Boy president] Eric Gomez many times. Collazo, you can't say you're pound-for-pound and won't even do a unification with Pedro."
