Keyshawn Davis isn’t even certain which weight class best suits him, let alone who he will fight next.
The former WBO lightweight champion is nonetheless willing to fight anyone in the junior welterweight or welterweight divisions other than Shakur Stevenson. Davis and Stevenson have long stated that they won’t fight each other due to their friendship, yet Davis has plenty of options other than The Ring and WBO 140-pound champion following his dominant performance against Nahir Albright in their 12-round rematch Saturday night at Scope Arena in Norfolk, Virginia.
Davis (15-0, 10 KOs, 1 NC) mentioned three potential opponents – Lamont Roach, Devin Haney and Oscar Duarte – to a group of reporters following his one-sided win on the scorecards against Albright (17-3, 7 KOs, 1 NC).
“I was on the phone with Lamont Roach, trying to make it happen,” Davis said. “In January, I walked up to Bill [Haney, Devin’s father and trainer], and he told me to stand on my word after the fight [against Jamaine Ortiz on January 31]. Why that didn’t happen, I don’t know. And I also was trying to get in contact with Oscar Duarte, but Oscar Duarte just fought on the David Benavidez card, so he just wanted to do that. So, those are the three names.”
Haney (33-0, 15 KOs, 1 NC), who owns the WBO welterweight title, said on social media that he's interested in facing Davis again after the 2020 Olympic silver medalist won another fight in his hometown. The three-division champion claimed on his X account that he is “coming for Keyshawn,” though a rematch with rival Ryan Garcia (25-2, 20 KOs, 1 NC), the WBC welterweight champ, and his own bout with Stevenson (25-0, 11 KOs) would be more lucrative fights for Haney.
Roach (25-1-3, 10 KOs) is likely to fight William Zepeda (33-1, 27 KOs) for the vacant WBC lightweight title next. Duarte (31-2-1, 23 KOs) defeated fellow Mexican Angel Fierro by split decision May 2 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, and therefore is on the same schedule as Davis.
Davis said. “Y’all know I ain’t ducking nobody. I done went on an extreme rant, calling everybody out. I done everything I can do. You know what I’m saying? So, like bro, at this point, whoever is willing to fight ‘The Businessman,’ let’s make it happen.”
Davis is The Ring’s No. 3 contender for Stevenson’s junior welterweight crown. Stevenson versus Davis would be a fascinating fight, a showdown one reporter pressed Davis about taking after he beat Albright by scores of 118-108, 118-108 and 117-109.
“How can I sleep at night?,” Davis responded when asked how he could rest knowing he didn’t test himself against an elite-level champion like Stevenson. “With millions of dollars in my bank account.”
