The bullseye on Dalton Smith’s back is getting bigger and bigger.
After settling for a majority draw against Nahir Albright in February, Frank Martin got back in the win column by stopping Tarik Zaina in the seventh round October 24 on the undercard of O’Shaquie Foster’s victory over Emanuel Navarrete at Frost Bank Center in San Antonio, Texas. The 31-year-old junior welterweight contender isn’t exactly on the cusp of a world title shot, but he admits that a fight against Smith (20-0, 14 KOs) would interest him.
“Dalton Smith a good fighter,” Martin told The Ring. “Tough fighter, strong, those are the types of fights I’m looking for, the top guys.”
Smith, The Ring’s No. 1 junior welterweight contender, successfully defended his WBC strap against Alberto Puello via split decision October 24 at Utilita Arena in his hometown of Sheffield, England. He originally won that title by stopping Subriel Matias in the fifth round of their January bout at Barclays Center in Brooklyn.
Martin isn’t on the 29-year-old Smith’s radar. Smith is looking for title unification bouts, mainly against Ring and WBO champion Shakur Stevenson.
At the moment, Martin (20-1-1, 13 KOs) isn’t ranked in the WBC’s top 15, making a fight against Smith even more unlikely. Still, the slick southpaw isn’t willing to give up on his title dreams that easily.
If Smith were willing to make a voluntary defense against him, he says that he would be more than willing to cede the home-ring advantage.
“I would come to the UK,” Martin said. “I would love to fight in the UK. I would love to get back out there by like February.”
