Gavin Gwynne's calorie-controlled menu is among the topic of conversation, as the Welshman heads up to junior welterweight with another unbeaten talent on the horizon this weekend.
“It's like a Chinese chicken looking thing with chips, surprisingly. I've got peppers, Chinese five spice, soy sauce, honey and it just tastes like a Chinese," Gwynne (18-4-2, 5 KOs) told The Ring.
If the above sounds good, once a week Gwynne has a treat from his favourite takeaway.
"I have a chicken wrap, medium. I have spicy rice, spicy wedges and three chicken tenders with garlic sauce every week."
The former British, Commonwealth and European lightweight champion spent years eating chicken, boiling rice and cutting out carbohydrates but before anybody gets the idea that the 36-year-old has lost his way and isn’t taking his upcoming fight with Khaleel Majid (16-0, 4 KOs) seriously, the tasty menu is the work of his nutritionist.
The 10-round fight will take place on the undercard preceding Fabio Wardley's WBO heavyweight title defense against Daniel Dubois, streamed exclusively live on DAZN PPV from Manchester's Co-op Live Arena.
“I think 10 stone will suit me in this fight but the plan is to beat Majid and move back down to lightweight,” he said.
“I said to Lee Eaton, my manager, that the only fights I want are title fights. I was getting offers for six and eight rounders. I’d rather go back to work. I’m a 10 round or 12 round fighter - 15 rounds if I had my way - but I wasn’t getting offers at lightweight so just had to take this fight or been left on the shelf again for probably another year.”
Gwynne is used to facing undefeated prospects.
In November 2024, Cameron Vuong's team decided that the aggressive Welshman would provide the prospect with a solid test but a notable scalp. Instead, Gwynne gave the youngster all he could handle and appeared extremely unfortunate to lose a decision. A year later, the two battled to a hard-fought draw in their rematch.
Majid's people have clearly seen enough to take the same gamble.
The Bolton ticket seller has had a slow-burning career but begun to increase his level of competition. Gwynne believes that he represents a significant step-up in every single aspect but whilst confident, he is also one of the most respectful fighters on the circuit and admires Majid's ambition in taking the fight.
“Fair play to him, though,” he said. “Fighters should be doing this. As a fighter myself, I want to test myself against good boys and fair play to him for accepting the fight, the same as Cameron Vuong did first time with me.”
Gwynne knows why he has been chosen but his performances against Vuong mean he enters the Majid matchup as the betting favorite. The outside expectation that he should win is nothing compared to the pressure he puts on himself. Gwynne knows that if things don’t go his way this weekend, his days of boxing for major titles will be over and he will have to return to work.
“He’s gonna come to show everyone what he’s made of. I know he sells a lot of tickets and got a lot of backing so he's going to put everything into this fight, so I took this fight really serious. If I lose to the likes of these guys, what's the point of me carrying on boxing?" he said.
“That's no disrespect to him but if I can’t compete at this level, there's no point in me competing at all. He’s a good fighter, don’t get me wrong. He does the basics very well but I don’t know why they’ve called me out. I was 36 on Saturday and they probably think I’m over the hill but I’m like fine wine. I just keep getting better with age.”
