Junior lightweight Moussa Gholam stayed active with a third-round thrashing of Alan Rodriguez in Buenos Aires on February 28.
The win made Gholam the mandatory challenger for the WBA title that changed hands when Anthony Cacace won a 12-round unanimous decision over Jazza Dickens on March 14.
"The fight in Argentina was just a statement of intent, to be able to fight for the title," Gholam told The Ring. "I'm not defined solely by my last fight in Argentina. I'm defined by all my previous fights."
The 30-year-old, born in Morocco but living in Spain, has been professional almost a decade and has one blemish on his record. That came when narrowly edged out by future WBA interim titleholder Elnur Samedov, suffering a 10-round split decision defeat despite flooring him seven rounds into their Dec. 2022 bout of unbeaten contenders.
Since then, Gholam (26-1, 17 KOs) has won all seven fights to put himself in line to rematch either Samedov or face Cacace, though he will likely have to wait.
"I think Cacace will first have to face interim champion Elnur Samedov because they have an agreement, and then I'll be next," he said. "If that's the case, I don't mind. I'll be next in line to go and claim what's mine."
Gholam believes the junior lightweight division has many strong fighters but says he'll separate himself from them.
"The [Dickens-Cacace] fight was a very close contest. I think that means the standard is very similar in the 130-pound division," he said. "I'm going to make the difference."
Having started working with AGON Sports last year, he's remained active, winning four fights inside the distance and feels they can guide him to the world title.
"I hope that by the end of this year I'll have the chance to fight for the title," he said. "It's a dream I have to make come true, come what may."
Which in turn would open up many other new avenues personally and for those around him.
"A better future for my family, and an open door for kids like me, who come from humble beginnings." he said.
Ingo Volckmann of AGON Sports wants to secure a title shot at Cacace.
"Moussa is more than ready," said the promoter. "He has the potential to become world champion and stay there.
"In every sparring session, every fight he impresses us time and time again. We're in high spirits and want [Cacace] as soon as possible. Let them tell us where and when. We're ready."
