Liam Paro’s promoter believes the Queenslander’s hard-fought victory over Lewis Crocker has opened the possibility of more major fights taking place in Australia.
On Wednesday, Paro (28-1, 16 KOs) outpointed The Ring's No. 9 welterweight contender in Crocker (22-1, 11 KOs) in Brisbane to become the IBF welterweight champion and a two-weight titleholder.
Paro got off to a flying start before surviving a damaged right eye and the Northern Irishman's late charge down the stretch in earn a close but unanimous 115-113 decision win.
The gutsy victory repaid the faith No Limit Boxing showed in Paro when outbidding Matchroom by just $27,000 for the right to stage the bout, securing the mandatory challenger home advantage.
It made Paro a significant player in one of boxing's most high-profile divisions.
In 2017, Jeff Horn produced a career-best display to deliver a memorable win over the legendary Manny Pacquiao. Five years later, Devin Haney made two trips around the world, twice outpointing George Kambosos for the undisputed and Ring lightweight titles.
Buoyed by Paro's win over Crocker and the success of the promotion, No Limit CEO George Rose spoke of his desire to bring the biggest fights and biggest names to Australia for Paro.
"I'd bring absolutely any one of them down. I think the two best divisions in boxing are the welterweight and junior middleweight divisions ... the champions that exist there Devin Haney, Rolly Romero, Ryan Garcia I would love to have any one of them down here, any day of the week," Rose said at the post-fight press conference.
"They've tossed up the likes of Manny Pacquiao who is still floating around in the welterweight division wanting to fight. That would be great to bring that down here as well."
Paro would likely start as a betting underdog against the champion trio but has shown that he isn’t cowed by a reputation.
In June 2024 he traveled to Puerto Rico and outpointed the previously undefeated and feared Subriel Matias to win the IBF 140-pound title. Although he lost the title to Richardson Hitchins six months later, he continued to push until the end and the reverse remains the only blemish on his record.
Rose believes the 30-year-old's latest win proved not only does he possess the steel and heart required to beat any of the division’s glamour names, but also the boxing ability and skill.
"I think off the back of that performance, I'd feel confident with any one of those names that we mentioned. I think it was one of the bravest performances that we've seen from an Australian fighter," Rose said.
"Liam Paro showed that he truly is elite level. He showed absolutely everything. His boxing skill set early to dominate that fight and his toughness at the back end. I think he showed that true Aussie spirit, that Aussie underdog grit that we see so often in sport because Australians are so often underdogs when we're taking on the rest of the world.
"He showed that grit that our great Australian athletes have and I couldn't be more proud of him."
