The upcoming bout between Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua has caused confusion among rival promoters as to who’s leading the promotional push for the huge heavyweight fight and where it will take place.
Fury has been tied to Frank Warren and Spencer Brown in recent years, while Joshua has been promoted by Eddie Hearn throughout his career.
Turki Alalshikh, owner of The Ring and chairman of Saudi Arabia’s General Entertainment Authority, is backing the fight financially, much like he’s done for previous Fury and Joshua fights. Alalshikh also plans on having Zuffa Boxing and UFC head Dana White involved in the event, much like White was for the Canelo Alvarez-Terence Crawford event in September on Netflix.
The confusion as to who’s in the driver’s seat has led to bickering between rival promoters, chiefly White and Hearn. The expletive-filled verbal sparrings and diatribes eventually led Alalshikh to call for a meeting aiming to broker peace.
On Sunday, White talked to the assembled media regarding the situation. When White was asked if a meeting would be beneficial to clear the air as to who’s promoting Fury-Joshua and where it will take place, he said “that would make sense.”
“I don’t know what our issues would be,” White continued. “I’m good … Yeah, listen: If Eddie was here, I’d talk to Eddie. I don’t have any problems. I have all the info [on the Fury-Joshua fight]. See what Turki says in the peace summit. I know where [the Fury-Joshua fight] is and never did I say it was in Las Vegas.”
White’s comments came after Hearn’s remarks Saturday stating that he's embracing war with White but is open to the idea of peace.
“Not really [can we find common ground and peace], if I’m honest with you,” Hearn said. “I mean, look, we’re all stubborn people. We’re all competitors. Those guys are used to getting their own way. They’ve never really had any competition. They don’t like criticism.
"Well, if that’s the case, you’d better get out of boxing real quick, because it’s a long, drawn-out war, and it’s given me fire in my stomach every single day. And I love competing. It doesn't have to get personal, it doesn't have to get nasty. But know one thing: We're gonna win.
“[Alalshikh] wants to bring everybody together. It’s very difficult because I don't really want to do that, if I'm honest. But we're partners with him, and you know, I'm not going to say, 'No, I'm not coming. I'm not going to listen.'
"We’ll listen, but I’m not really interested in standing in a room and everyone putting their hands in the middle and going, ‘Yeah, here we are. We’re at peace. We’re moving forward.’ Because then, when you leave the room, everybody starts again anyway. It’s like a real-life war negotiation, and you see what happens. So, I’m enjoying it, to be honest with you.”
Hearn also shed light on what the agreement between Fury and Joshua looks like.
“Regarding Fury against Joshua, the contract is very clear on so many different levels, and the only way things can change in the contract is with Joshua and me agreeing to change that,” Hearn said. “So, if we want to start again and renegotiate the contract, we’ll have those conversations with Turki Alalshikh, but it’ll be a lot easier just to carry on doing the fight in the UK, where it should be. But first of all, we have to win on July 25 [against Kristian Prenga].”
While Hearn and White are at each other’s throats and have even talked about actually fighting each other, White said that he only sees the four major American sports leagues as his chief competition, not Hearn, or others for that matter.
“I know it's fun to ask and all, but we are not the same – any of these guys,” White said. “The competitors that I look at is competition right now are the NFL, NBA, MLB, and NHL. None of these other guys matter to me. None of them, on either the MMA side or the boxing side.
“I’m not even going into that kind of s*** anymore, man. We are not the same. I don’t hate Eddie Hearn. Until I got into it, me and Eddie were cool. I like Frank Warren. I don’t have any problem with any of these guys. But we’re gonna compete. And months ago, everybody was so excited to compete, and nobody’s excited anymore. I don’t understand why nobody is excited anymore. I’m still excited.
“All these guys that hated each other six months ago are all buddies and on the same network [DAZN] and trying to work together. I love it. Like I keep saying, judge us at the end of the year – it’s been good so far.”
