Carlos Adames easily outpointed Austin Williams in defense of his WBC middleweight title Saturday. A day later, The Ring’s No. 1-ranked 160-pounder announced his move to 168.
“I make 160 very easily, but I’ll make 168 shake even more – here I come,” Adames said on social media. “Tell 168 that Bronco has arrived. There were many names that ran from 160 and moved up in weight, but now I’m going to catch up to them.”
Adames (25-1-1, 18 KOs) dropped Williams (20-2, 13 KOs) in the second round and outlanded him 254 to 127, according to CompuBox, to score the victory via scores of 118-108, 117-109 and 117-109.
Adames, a 31-year-old Dominican, fought as a middleweight for five years and accumulated a record of 5-0-1 with wins against Sergiy Derevyanchenko, Juan Macias Montiel, Julian Williams, Terrell Gausha and Austin Williams. Adames also fought to a highly disputed split draw with Hamzah Sheeraz in February of last year, a fight many believed Adames won.
But the middleweight division is currently thin at the top, as Janibek Alimkhanuly is dealing with a PED scandal, and Cuban contender Yoenli Hernandez, ranked No. 2 by The Ring, is still nine fights into his career and on a crusade proving himself. The fighter who would benefit from Adames leaving the division is WBC interim champion Jesus Ramos, who would be elevated to full champion once the move is made official with the sanctioning body.
After the fight was over against “Ammo” Williams, Adames said Sheeraz should seek a sequel against him.
“I was the one who beat him. If he wants vengeance, then he should send me the offer,” said Adames.
Sheeraz currently competes as a super middleweight. He last fought in July, knocking out Edgar Berlanga.
Super middleweight is loaded talented fighters, including two-time undisputed champion Canelo Alvarez, who appears headed to a fight against WBC champion Christian Mbilli in September. Lester Martinez picked up the WBC interim strap on Saturday.
Armando Resendez, the WBA titleholder, is set to defend his belt against Jaime Munguia on May 2.
Osleys Iglesias will face Pavel Silyagin for the vacant IBF title on April 9.
The Ring and WBO titles are vacant.
Top-flight contenders in the division are rounded out by Sheeraz, Berlanga, Jermall Charlo, Caleb Plant, Bektemir Melikuziev, Diego Pacheco and Jacob Bank.
And then there are the reputable likes of Bruno Surace, William Scull, Erik Bazinyan, Darius Fulghum, Kevin Lele Sadjo, Callum Simpson and Troy Williamson.
Adames should have no shortage of options for his next fight.
“Everyone runs, everyone backs up. I still haven’t faced a fighter who comes forward. I am built to break fighters,” said Adames.
