The ball is in Shakur Stevenson’s court, according to Bill Haney.
Devin Haney's father, manager and trainer said Monday they’re waiting to hear back from Stevenson on a fight at catch weight of 144 pounds. Haney and Stevenson have traded words on social media and agreed to a fight at 144 pounds online June 9.
“We have Shakur Stevenson standing in the way of Devin’s quest to be on the Mount Rushmore of boxing,” Bill Haney said on the newest episode of “Inside The Ring,” which debuted Monday on DAZN. “Because with three divisions and the youngest undisputed champion, I don’t know if we’re going to get all the respect we need unless we run through all of them. Shakur hasn’t responded to the 144-pound agreement that Devin Haney said that he will have with him.”
Haney (33-0, 15 KOs, 1 NC) and Stevenson (25-0, 11 KOs) have also been rumored to be signing with Zuffa Boxing.
Haney, of Henderson, Nevada, is ranked No. 8 on The Ring’s pound-for-pound list and is its No. 1 welterweight contender. Stevenson, of Newark, New Jersey, is No. 3 on The Ring’s pound-for-pound list, The Ring junior welterweight champion and its No. 1 lightweight contender.
Haney, 27, became a three-division champion in November when he beat Brian Norman Jr. by unanimous decision for the WBO welterweight title. Stevenson, 29, claimed a world title in a fourth division in his last fight when he outpointed Teofimo Lopez on January 31 to win The Ring and WBO 140-pound belts.
If a fight against Stevenson doesn’t come to fruition, Bill said a fight against former WBO lightweight champion Keyshawn Davis, who is the mandatory challenger for Haney’s title, could be next. Davis (15-0, 10 KOs, 1 NC), a former WBO lightweight champion who has fought twice at 140 pounds, would make his welterweight debut against Haney if they fight next.
A potential rematch against WBC welterweight champion Ryan Garcia won’t happen unless he undergoes drug testing with VADA for “a significant amount of time.” Garcia (25-2, 20 KOs, 1 NC) had a majority-decision win over Haney in April 2024 overturned to a no-contest after he failed multiple drug tests for the performance-enhancing drug ostarine.
The 27-year-old Victorville, California native is expected to face Conor Benn (25-1, 14 KOs) on September 12 in Las Vegas.
For now, the Haneys have their sights are on Stevenson, but getting the fight across the finish line has proven difficult.
“It’s been a fight to get him in the ring,” Bill said. “I think that’s going to be the hardest part for Deebo, to get him in the ring, than to actually be in the ring. I think more people are starting to understand that maybe Bill Haney might have a little bit of truth to it by the confidence that we’ve shown about it. … This is a fight that determines who’s the best fighter in boxing.”
