MARTIN WINS BY SPLIT DECISION
An emotional Martin falls to the canvas in tears after he's announced as the winner! With the win, he earned a secondary WBC featherweight title.
The judges' scorecards reflected how close the fight was. Judge Guido Cavalleri had it 95-94 for Picasso, while Jorge Gorini had the same scorecard in favor of Martin and Barry Linderman had it a little wider at 96-93 for the Filipino.
It was a hard-fought bout by both guys. In the end, Martin earned a career-best win and made it 4-1 for The World over Mexico.
PICASSO-MARTIN GOES TO THE SCORECARDS
It was a ho-hum final round to end a competitive fight. This could go either way after 10 rounds.
PICASSO-MARTIN CLOSE ENTERING FINAL ROUND
The fight feels like it's up for grabs as they enter the 10th and final round.
Picasso has worked his way into the fight with his body work and ability to keep the shorter Martin at the end of his punches. Martin's straight left hand, right hook and some solid body work have carried him. He has slowed down a bit since the beginning of the fight, though.
This round could decide the fight.
PICASSO DROPS MARTIN
Picasso scored a knockdown early in the seventh round with a well-timed jab. Martin wasn't hurt badly and contended that it came from their feet getting tangled up, but the replay showed it was a clean shot that sent him to the canvas.
In a close fight, that knockdown could loom large if this goes to the scorecards.
BACK-AND-FORTH ACTION
Both fighters have had their moments and are landing big shots.
Martin's best offense has come from his straight left hand and right hook. Picasso has landed some sneaky body shots, which could pay dividends, though, time is of the essence for the Mexican.
MARTIN IN CONTROL EARLY
Stop me if you've heard this before.
The speed of the Filipino southpaw has him in control through two rounds. He's routinely finding a home for his straight left hand as well.
Picasso is having his moments, but he has some catching up to do.
PICASSO-MARTIN NEXT
The most intriguing bout on the prelims is up next.
Martin has spent much of his career fighting in his home country of the Philippines. Picasso rebounded from his unanimous decision loss to Naoya Inoue in December with a second-round stoppage of Maicol Rincon on August 29 in Mexico.
The winner of this 10-round featherweight bout will emerge as a legit contender in a wide-open 126-pound division.
NURMAGANBET CALLS OUT OSLEYS IGLESIAS
On the heels of his devastating knockout victory over Vazquez, he called out IBF super middleweight champion Osleys Iglesias during a backstage interview.
Few fighters have appeared eager to face the Cuban southpaw. If Nurmaganbet's most recent performances are any indication, that could be a very intriguing bout for both guys.
Iglesias (16-0, 15 KOs) is The Ring's No. 2-rated contender for its vacant title. Nurmaganbet is ranked No. 9 by the IBF.
ALMOHAMMAD DOMINATES VILLEGAS
It was one-way traffic for Almohammad throughout their six-round bout. He battered Villegas throughout for a unanimous decision victory in his hometown.
Almohammad's win makes it 3-1 for The World over Mexico.
PRE-FIGHT READING
Check out these stories from The Ring ahead of the “Mexico versus The World” card.
NURMAGANBET SCORES KO OF THE YEAR CONTENDER
Nurmaganbet made quick work of Vazquez, scoring a devastating first-round knockout. After dropping Vazquez with a little over a minute left in the first with a right hook and straight left hand, the Kazakh southpaw sent him to the canvas for good with the same combination just before the end of the round.
The knockout victory was Nurmaganbet’s 13th straight inside the distance. His win made it 2-1 in favor of The World against Mexico. Leon won the first fight for The World with his decision victory over Aguirre, and Rojo got Mexico on the board with his stoppage win over Biea.
A late-notice update regarding Munguia's fight! The WBA announced Friday he has been granted special permission to make the first defense of his title against Zon (12-0-1, 10 KOs) later today. The 32-year-old Russian southpaw has an unexpected chance to spoil the Mexican's night on what could be a big one for Team Canelo here.
Mbilli (29-0-1, 24 KOs) last boxed on Canelo's undercard for his Crawford super fight and now, he's got a long-awaited shot at the man he told promoter Camille Estephan he wanted back in 2020.
How about some pre-fight reading? Take a look at our fight preview for the big one here, as well as an interesting tidbit from WBO featherweight champion Rafael Espinoza and why he's willing to stick around at 126 pounds...
Before that comes the eagerly anticipated return of Ring ambassador and exciting 130-pound prospect Reito Tsutsumi (5-0, 5 KOs). Last in action on the Anthony Joshua-Kristian Prenga bill in July, the 24-year-old Japan talent faces a durable Mexican in Raymundo Garcia, but has been racking up finishes for fun since turning pro.
