Keyshawn Davis gave Nahir Albright credit Thursday for defeating Frank Martin in his upcoming opponent's last fight.
Albright officially settled for a rare unanimous draw with the favored Martin on February 21 in Las Vegas. He was good enough over 10 rounds, though, to justify a rematch versus Davis in his hometown scheduled for Saturday night at Scope Arena in Norfolk, Virginia.
Albright’s bout with Martin might’ve earned him another opportunity and payday, but Davis warned those expecting to see him have trouble, too, will be surprised.
“I had him beating Frank,” Davis said during a press conference Thursday. “I thought he was going to beat Frank. I told my peoples bet on [Albright]. ‘I think [Albright will] beat Frank, honestly.’ I went back, watched the fight and thought he beat Frank, but it was a close fight and I think he did a great job, he did his best. I just feel like both of them are not on my level."
Albright (17-2, 7 KOs), of Sicklerville, New Jersey, interjected by reminding Davis that he already proved he is on the former WBO lightweight champion’s level in their first fight 2½ years ago.
Davis won that 10-round bout by majority decision in October 2023, only to have the result changed to a no-contest because the 2020 Olympic silver medalist tested positive for marijuana, a substance banned by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation.
“I’m not here to go back and forth with like what we all know,” Davis told Albright. “You could say whatever you want to say. I'm [going to] knock your ass out Saturday.”
Judges Tim Cheatham, Max De Luca and John McCarthy all scored the Albright-Martin match 95-95. One judge, John Basile, scored Albright’s first fight with Davis 95-95, but he was overruled by Robert Hoyle (96-94) and David Sutherland (97-93).
Between his fights with Davis (14-0, 10 KOs) and Martin (19-1-1, 13 KOs), Albright beat the former's older brother, then-unbeaten southpaw Kelvin, by majority decision June 7 at Scope Arena. Albright alleged afterward that Keyshawn and his younger brother, junior welterweight prospect Keon, confronted him in his dressing room.
That drama, coupled with the competitive nature of their initial meeting, encouraged Davis’ promoter, Top Rank Inc., to schedule their rematch to headline the first card of the company’s new content partnership with DAZN.
The streaming service’s undercard coverage, which will include fights involving Kelvin and Keon, is scheduled to start at 6:30 p.m. ET.
Keyshawn Davis is a 16-1 favorite to beat Albright in their junior welterweight rematch, according to DraftKings. He also knocked out Jamaine Ortiz (20-3-1, 10 KOs), a common opponent who beat Albright on points in February 2022, in his most recent action, yet Davis didn’t exude overconfidence.
“I’m not underestimating none of my opponents,” Davis said. “He’s a guy that I already fought before, so I can’t underestimate him, neither. But again, Keyshawn is mentally, physically stronger, and Saturday it’s gonna show."
