Davis Will ‘Probably Go To 147,’ Pass On Title Fight With Delgado

Keyshawn Davis’ convincing victory over Nahir Albright on Saturday night kept him in position to fight for the IBF junior welterweight title in his next fight.
Struggling to make the division’s 140-pound limit for his rematch with Albright might’ve convinced Davis to skip that championship chance, though. The undefeated Davis acknowledged after beating Albright by unanimous decision in their 12-round bout at Scope Arena in Norfolk, Virginia that he will likely move up to the welterweight division when he returns to the ring later this year.
“Man, I’ll probably go to 147,” Davis told DAZN’s Chris Mannix during his post-fight interview. “I ain’t gonna lie. All this making weight stuff – it ain’t for me. Like, as y’all can see, I ain’t good at making weight. But I just know how to fight. You know what I’m saying? So, I don’t know. We’ll go back to the drawing board. I’ll talk to my coaches about that. But either way, it’s gonna be [belt to ass] in whatever weight class I go to.”
Davis, 27, made the contracted limit of 140 pounds on his third try Friday for his second bout against Albright (17-3, 7 KOs, 1 NC). The 2020 Olympic silver medalist had much more difficulty cutting weight the last time he boxed in his hometown, where Davis came in 4.3 pounds overweight for what was supposed to be his first defense of the WBO lightweight title against Edwin De Los Santos 11 months ago.
Norfolk’s Davis (15-0, 10 KOs, 1 NC) is 2-0 in junior welterweight fights since that disastrous situation caused him to move up five pounds from the lightweight limit of 135. He is also The Ring’s No. 3 junior welterweight contender for a title owned by Shakur Stevenson (25-0, 11 KOs).
Stevenson, a four-division champion from Newark, New Jersey, and Davis have repeatedly stated that their close friendship would prevent them from fighting. Davis and Stevenson are managed by James Prince, with whom Stevenson sat ringside Saturday night to support Davis, his older brother, Kelvin, and his younger brother, Keon, during their decision wins.
Keyshawn Davis doesn’t have any such ties to Lindolfo Delgado (24-0, 16 KOs), the IBF’s No. 1 contender for the 140-pound championship Richardson Hitchins gave up last month to compete at welterweight.
The IBF could order a bout between Mexico’s Delgado and Davis for that unclaimed championship because Davis is its next available contender. The No. 2 spot in the IBF’s rankings is unoccupied and third-rated Oscar Duarte told The Ring recently that he won’t fight Delgado for the IBF belt because both boxers are trained by Robert Garcia.
If Davis decides to remain at junior welterweight, a fight against Delgado shouldn’t become complicated to make because they’re promoted by the same company, Bob Arum’s Top Rank Inc.
Davis also mentioned possibly boxing Duarte (31-2-1, 23 KOs).
Though it would make better business sense to fight Lindolfo for the IBF title, Davis and Duarte are on similar schedules. Duarte defeated fellow Mexican Angel Fierro (23-5-2, 18 KOs) by split decision in a 12-round match May 2 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
