Touted twin prospects Nikolai and Sebastian Terteryan will fight on the same card for the first time in their professional careers Saturday at the iconic Santa Monica Pier in Los Angeles.
The Terteryans have over 500 combined amateur fights, they both compete as junior middleweights as pros, are signed to Oscar De La Hoya's Golden Boy Promotions, managed by Rick Mirigian, and trained by coach Jamie Robinson at the Top Rank Gym in Las Vegas.
The 25-year-old brothers are Armenians who were born and raised in Denmark and speak four different languages, but fighting is their favorite tongue.
In their forthcoming fights, Nikolai Terteryan (3-0, 3 KOs), a 2024 Olympian, looks to give Cristian Perez Hernandez a lashing in a six-rounder, while Sebastian Terteryan (1-0, 1 KO) takes on Josias Gonzalez in a four-rounder.
The fights are part of the "Butterfly Brawl" charity event staged by Mark Habibi, the founder of Wise Owl Boxing and Fightbook.
Nikolai and Sebastian were supposed to make their pro debuts together in July of last year, but Sebastian's opponent badly blew weight, and the fight was scrapped. Nikolai blasted his test in one round and has two more fights than his brother, because Sebastian dealt with an injury last year.
Sebastian made his pro debut in November with a first-round knockout. He'll now try to best his brother and beat Gonzalez in quicker fashion, as Nikolai stopped Gonzalez in three rounds five months ago.
"It's clear which path we're headed on. Our performances will have to continue to back that up," Nikolai told The Ring. "We just have to win, and it won't be about if we are going to make it, but when. It's only a matter of time.
"We're holding our own, sparring against everyone who steps foot inside the gym. We're not giving up any ground. Everyone has quickly realized what we bring. They know that if they want real work, they have to call us." Golden Boy is bullish on building the brothers as top draws across Los Angeles, which is home to one of the largest Armenian populations outside of the country.
"Golden Boy really wants to push us across Southern California, because they know that our Armenian fans will support us," Sebastian told The Ring. "Golden Boy's plan, along with our manager, Rick Mirigian, their vision is entirely aligned with what we want to do. It has resonated with us, and we are realizing our ambitions and working toward fulfilling our dreams."
After looking up to the likes of former world champions Vic Darchinyan and Arthur Abraham, the Terteryans are promising they'll ultimately prove their potential by becoming Armenia's next world champions.
Noel Mikaelian, a two-time WBC cruiserweight champion, is the only active titleholder of Armenian heritage. Other Armenian champions in boxing history include Arsen Goulamirian, Artem Dalakian, Artur Grigorian, David Lemieux, and Susi Kentikian, while Vanes Martirosyan, Karo Murat, and Azat Hovhannisyan challenged for titles in their heydays.
"We are incredibly proud to be raising the red, blue and orange flag representing Armenia," Sebastian said. "We believe that we can be world-title ready within 15 fights and three years. There is no question about it, and Oscar De La Hoya agrees as well. Golden Boy is confident in us."
Nikolai and Sebastian come from a fighting family. Their father, Tigran, who passed away in 2020 at 50, represented the Armenian national team as a heavyweight and settled in Denmark during his amateur career.
Nikolai and Sebastian are now aiming to translate all of the success they've enjoyed as European amateurs in the pro ranks in America.
"We want to get the experience we need and move fast in our careers," Nikolai said. "We're happy with where we are right now in our careers and are looking forward to building our records and some serious momentum for our world title shots.
"It's going to be amazing to have two Armenian twin brothers as active world champions."
