December 11 just got a whole lot bigger.
Former WBC Heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder will collide with reigning cruiserweight world champion Jai Opetaia in a co-feature of the Anthony Joshua vs Tyson Fury superfight at Principality Stadium in Cardiff, Wales.
Wilder (45-4-1, 43 KOs) comes into one of the toughest matchups of his career after a hard-fought split decision over Derek Chisora in April. Wilder, 41, has been a lingering player in the heavyweight division since his reign as champion ended six years ago.
In his prime, the 6-foot-7-inch former Olympian terrorized his foes with a stiff jab and a freakishly devastating right hand. Despite losses to Tyson Fury, Joseph Parker and Zhilei Zhang, the "Bronze Bomber" is still an explosive threat, and he'll be looking to unload on the undefeated Australian.
Opetaia (31-0, 24 KOs) may have his work cut out for him heading into his heavyweight debut. The former Olympian claimed the Ring and IBF belts in 2022 and has been on a tear since, recording seven knockouts in his last nine fights.
Opetaia gives up five inches of height, and his 76-inch reach will be overshadowed by Wilder's massive 83-inch wingspan, but the cruiserweight kingpin's quick combinations and sneaky power could buckle the giant, as long as his chin can weather the storm early.
Wilder vs. Opetaia has all the makings of a fan-friendly barnburner between two fighters on separate ends of their careers. While Wilder looks to extend his extensive career with another big name, Opetaia strives to be great and challenge himself against one of the biggest punchers of this generation. December 11 was already shaping up to be an historic night, but this fight could produce fireworks.
