LONDON – Eddie Hearn would've been satisfied to see a trio of his young prospects tested on their biggest stage yet.
After all, the Matchroom chief always stresses an eagerness to see whether the highly touted youngsters have intangibles that will set them apart on the path to world championship contention and long-term success.
Giorgio Visioli has already garnered attention aplenty stateside, featured on a Jaron Ennis undercard last October and told The Ring of his desire to face Floyd Mayweather-backed prospect Curmel Moton at some point this year.
It was fitting then, seeing the 22-year-old deliver eye-catching shots as he laid the table for George Liddard in the first defense of his English lightweight title against Levi Giles, winning 99-90, 100-89 and 99-90 after 10 rounds.
Smart punch placement and controlling range behind his jab made this a much different fight than the fiery duel he willingly engaged in with Joe Howarth before Christmas for the belt, though there he displayed a willingness to box on the inside where needed and entice danger by doing so.
While that was again on display in periods here, it was solely on his terms. He bobbed and weaved, showboated for good measure too and it felt like a finish would come whenever he wished - especially after flooring Giles (17-3-1, 4 KOs) with an avalanche of unanswered punches midway through the fifth. The Grimsby visitor gingerly rose to his feet at the count of nine, survived the stanza and did enough to prolong a painful evening worth of punishment.
Visioli landed a flurry of bruising body shots early in the seventh and midway through round eight, foreshadowing the way he wanted to end matters as a thudding smack repeatedly pressed against Giles' cherry red midsection.
Giles had a brief encouraging spell fighting on the inside in the eighth, though Visioli's attempts to find a final round finish were halted by a low blow a minute into the frame. Even with an accidental foul, the result was long a foregone conclusion and hearing the final bell was merely a moral victory after a one-sided showcase here.
Sains squeezes past Osaze
Jimmy Sains' face and that of his trainer Tony Sims said all you needed to know. He made the first defense of his English middleweight title, though it was anything but straightforward against Derrick Osaze with a 10-round majority decision nod (95-95, 97-93, 96-94) to narrowly retain his strap after an intense gutcheck.
Osaze told The Ring a darker side would show itself in this encounter and 14 months removed from his competitive defeat against Liddard, he was already more urgent and aggressive in the early going against a harder puncher in Sains. Calculated body work did the trick, walking down a younger man whose fast flurries still caused him to freeze at times, but it was quickly evident that an early night would not be awaiting the English champion.
Sains (12-0, 10 KOs) established his jab early, but needed to quicken out of corners on the back foot, while Osaze pawed and made their exchanges physical by wearing on a fan favorite not used to this level of sustained intensity.
Just as the decade-long pro's pressure was paying off in the third, it almost didn't matter entirely as he was punished for overextending and missing the target. Sains responded quickly by connecting with a right cross to stagger the 31-year-old back, though he recovered by shelling up as a pair of left hands soon followed.
Unbothered by that hiccup, Osaze (13-4, 3 KOs) caught Sains clean with an overhand right midway through round four and pressed while his corner warned him against spoiling his work by clinching. Sains still had some success, though it was infrequent and the more experienced man was good value for an early lead through five rounds.
The sixth largely belonged to Osaze, though Sains stirred the crowd's anticipation levels with a promising powerful flurry in the final half-minute while there was more encouragement for the defending champion in the seventh.
Osaze was still rough-housing him in the eighth, both looked weary in the ninth and after an attritional duel where neither had control, it felt fitting the verdict still hung in the balance heading into the final frame. Osaze's team and fans ringside increased in volume, aware how important optics could sway opinion in the final 90 seconds as both, open-mouthed, threw caution to the wind. In the end, Sains finished stronger, yet remains a work in progress.
Buttigieg back from the brink
An absorbing battle ensued early during the televised portion as Emmanuel Buttigieg (12-0, 4 KOs) overcame adversity to dramatically stop Jake Goodwin (8-3-1, 1 KO) in the ninth round of their English middleweight title eliminator. After a back-and-forth start with both enjoying periods of success, the second half took a turn.
The tension heightened midway through round six, when Buttigieg was deducted a point after repeatedly having his gumshield fall out as he absorbed straight punches, during a stronger frame for the Central Area champion.
"He's looking for a way out," bellowed Team Goodwin, as they sensed the momentum shifting their way. Buttigieg was deducted another point a round later and referee Lee Every gave him a final warning – any more infringements and he'd be disqualified. His response was defiant: swinging wild haymakers and jostling for control in the center of the ring.
Goodwin's pit-pat punches, sneaky body work and uppercuts punctuated a frantic few minutes as Buttigieg's horde of fans roared their youngster on, no doubt aware he was probably losing and needed their support.
Unsteady legs swayed and jeopardy lingered in the ninth, Goodwin looking less assertive and taking a half step longer before throwing shots. Two minutes into the round, an explosive ending came: Buttigieg connected clean with a left hook, then two follow-up right hands as the 27-year-old was on his way down before celebrating wildly.
"He 100% needed a stoppage there," Hearn stressed in the ring minutes later, after the initial hubbub settled and Buttigieg sheepishly apologised for an overzealous release of emotion. "He has to make improvements but has got heart, showed here that he's got the minerals and found a way to win," the 21-year-old's promoter later added.
Mitchell, Maca, Bevan and Ward all victorious
In the final action preceding the four-fight main card on DAZN, Conor Benn-managed featherweight Connor Mitchell (2-0, 1 KO) showcased a willingness to trade – too often for his own good – but nonetheless the savvy southpaw had too much class for Italy's Yuri Zanoli over 12 minutes, winning every round.
It's easy to forget Adam Maca (5-0, 5 KOs) is still only 18, after unloading spiteful combination punching en route to a mercy stoppage midway through the fourth against Lydon Chircop. The Brighton puncher, who made his pro debut two weight divisions below in New York nine months ago, didn't need the full distance in his first six-rounder.
Super middleweight prospect Taylor Bevan (8-0, 8 KOs) wasted no time scoring another stoppage, this time needing little over five minutes to dismiss Argentina's Bulacio (15-11, 10 KOs) with body shots in what was supposed to be another step-up. Essex's Louie Ward opened the card with a points win on his debut over four rounds against 30-fight veteran Faure (4-24-3).
